Zanzibar is called the Spice Island or The sultan’s island, but the name seems to derive from the persian Zangh (black) and bars (ground), “land of the Blacks” to indicate the original inhabitants of the island. A most fascinating reconstruction by the explorer Francis Burton draws the origins of the island name from the arabic phrase “zayn l barr za”, meaning “this island is beautiful”.
Zanzibar had considerable importance in the Greek and Phoenician maritime trade in the 600 A.C, mainly for the richness of its territory, and for the strategic position in the Indian Ocean. The archipelago was visited by Persian merchants, arabs and indians: this mix of cultures and peoples in East Africa gave rise to the swahili culture, of which Zanzibar is the nerve center and the contemporary testimony.
Between ups and downs, the archipelago came under portuguese rule, lasted nearly two centuries, then to the Arabic Oman empire, with capital Stone Town. The economy was characterized by a flourishing trade in silk, ivory, tropical fruits, spices and also slaves unfortunately, which completed only at the end of the 19th century. During the colonial era Zanzibar fell under the British administration until the independence and the birth of Tanzania, of which the archipelago is now part.
A long and interesting story, for a land marked by the passage of different civilizations, contributing so to the creation of a proper Zanzibarian identity. Visiting many places of interest, you will learn about the simple life of Zanzibar today as well as traces of past eras.
