House of wonder

The house of wonders built in 1883 by a British marine engineer as a ceremonial palace for Sultan Barghash.

When it was build it was the tallest building in East- Africa, and it was decorated with the first electric lights on Zanzibar, leading British sailors to call it the Sultan’s Christmas Tree.

The palace suffered a great damage in the 1868 bombardment, but it has well been restored and is now a museum.

The museum contains permanent expositions on a variety of themes related to the islands natural heritage, local culture and economics.
