Jozani Forest is a nature reserve half way between Stone Town and the south-east coast.
Jozani Forest has various nature trails to explore through different natural habitats that include a mangrove broad walk, a botanical nature trail and a monkey-sighting site.
Each of these provide opportunities to catch a glimpse of a number of interesting rare species.
Probably the most interesting of these are the red colobus monkeys that are native to this specific environment and are not occurring naturally anywhere else in the world. While walking along the paths of the forest you will realize how sociable these monkeys are!
You will also be fascinated by their jumping skills, which you will be able to admire at a very close proximity.
Over 40 different types of birds have been viewed in this forest, making it an extremely interesting location also for birdwatchers.
The mangrove board walk may provide a sighting of the rare Zanzibari coconut crab, which is also found on Chumbe Island.
This lumbering old custacean grows up to half a metre and can weight up to 3 kg. The crabs have been known to slice through tin cans, pots and pans to get to the food inside.
